Kerala Braces for Sweltering Summer, Temperatures Set to Surpass 40 Degrees Celsius in April

As Kerala grapples with scorching temperatures, the excruciating heatwave adds to the fervor of the ongoing election campaign, impacting political workers and residents alike. Weather experts warn that if the current trend persists, temperatures are likely to soar above 40 degrees Celsius in April, raising concerns across the state.

Palakkad and Punalur have already recorded the highest temperatures in Kerala, with other districts also experiencing elevated temperatures. From Kottayam to Kozhikode, the mercury continues to rise, with an increase in the number of days marked by high temperatures. Punalur and Palakkad have been experiencing temperatures ranging from 37 to 39 degrees since the beginning of March, indicating a concerning trend for the upcoming months.

Additionally, the state has witnessed significantly reduced rainfall, with only 1.4 mm recorded compared to the average of 18.1 mm. Certain districts like Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, and Wayanad have received no rainfall, exacerbating the heatwave conditions. However, there is a glimmer of hope as weather forecasts predict summer rain in the last week of March and early April.

The underlying cause of the extreme heat is attributed to the El Nino phenomenon, characterized by unusual warming of the sea surface in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon leads to increased atmospheric temperatures, accentuated by rising humidity levels, intensifying the perception of heat.

In light of the soaring temperatures, residents are urged to take precautions to safeguard their health. Drinking ample water, seeking shade, wearing light-colored clothing, and ensuring indoor air circulation are recommended measures. Additionally, individuals are advised against leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles exposed to the sun, while the consumption of alcohol and caffeinated beverages should be moderated.

As Kerala braces for potentially record-breaking temperatures in the coming months, proactive measures and awareness efforts are essential to mitigate the impact of the scorching summer heatwave.
