Doctors find forceps inside woman’s abdomen in Hyderabad after three months of surgery

Hyderabad : Doctors find forceps inside woman’s abdomen in Hyderabad. It happened after three months of surgery. This woman in Hyderabad was having excruciating pain for three months before an x-ray reveals a pair of surgical forceps in her abdomen. Which the doctors forgot to remove after a surgery in November.

Incident – An overview

The mistake came to light when the patient — Maheshwari Chowdary (33) of Mangalhat area in Hyderabad, checked in to the same hospital — Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), a prestigious state-run hospital in Hyderabad, on Friday with severe stomach pain.

An X-ray of her abdomen reveals that a pair of artery forceps.(a scissors-like instrument for surgeons to remove tissues and hold internal parts during surgery), was firmly visible in her stomach.

Accusing the doctors of their criminal negligence in conducting surgeries, relatives of the patient on Saturday staged a dharna in front of the hospital and demanded action against the surgeons who botched up the surgery.

The doctors are pacifiying them saying they will conduct another surgery in the evening. Thus remove the instrument from the abdomen. They ensures that they will take care of Maheshwari’s health.

Director of NIMS Dr K Manohar says Maheswari is under treatment in the hospital with severe abdominal pain on October 28. A surgery for hernia is carried out in the first week of November. She left the hospital on November 12 after surgery.

Mahadev, a close relative of the patient told media. A few days after returning home, Maheshwari began to pain in the abdomen. She kept on taking medicines for pain, as the prescription of the doctors. But it got severe in the last few days. So, she came back to NIMS for further check-up. Where it is finally came to light that the medical instrument is embedded in her abdomen.

“She was complaining of stomach ache within days of surgery at NIMS. We tried different kinds of medicines but her condition did not improve. This is totally negligent on the part of surgeons because of which she had to suffer,” said Mahadev.

Doctors perspective

Dr Manohar says an enquiry is on to find out the issues and incident. “Preliminary investigation states that three doctors. – Beerappa, Venu and Varma took part in the surgery. We have set up an internal committee to probe the issue. The committee will initiate action against them after due inquiry process,” he says.
