Dubai to Impose 18,000 Dirhams Fine for Violating Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Dubai Police have intensified their efforts to enforce traffic laws by installing additional radars and surveillance cameras in various locations. These new AI-powered systems are designed to detect individuals using mobile phones while driving, and violators will face substantial fines. A recent video shared on social media demonstrates the capabilities of these cameras, which can automatically identify lawbreakers by zooming in and accurately determining whether drivers are talking, texting, or using social media.

Previously, there was a misconception that Dubai’s cameras and radars could not detect such violations. However, since 2020, the police have transitioned to a smart radar system that can spot mobile phone use, traffic lane violations, and other traffic infractions. The penalty for mobile phone use while driving is 800 dirhams, equivalent to approximately Rs 18,000. To deter illegal driving behavior, Dubai Police conduct various awareness campaigns and share videos of accidents involving vehicles using mobile phones on social media platforms. In the past eight months, there have been 99 accidents in Dubai, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives. During this period, the police recorded a total of 35,527 violations.
