Huawei announces their foldable smartphone : Huawei Mate X

Huawei is challenging Samsung with their own take on the foldable form factor with the new Huawei Mate X. Samsung Galaxy Fold is already in news for  bringing this form of devise.

After Samsung, Huawei showcases its first foldable smartphone. Called Huawei Mate X, the foldable smartphone functions just like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold but has a few subtle changes.

Specifications-

Huawei Mate X is essentially a combination of three displays in total. When folds up, it offersa large 8-inch screen. It has as many as two cover displays. There’s a 6.6-inch front display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and a 6.38-inch back display.

Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X features a borderless design with no notch or punch-hole camera. The foldable phone uses ‘Falcon Wing’ design and is 5.4mm thin.

The cameras on the Mate X are tucked on the corner bezel of the foldable phone. There’s a USB Type-C port at the bottom corner and speaker grille at the centre. The power button and fingerprint sensor are placed on the side. Huawei Mate X will be available in one colour of ‘Interstellar Blue’. It comes up with a price tag of 2299 euros (Rs 1,85,000 approximately), Huawei Mate X will be available in mid 2019.

Market prediction-

Samsung and Huawei’s approach to foldables are complete opposites, though Huawei’s approach notably mirrors that of Royole’s FlexPai. Both smartphones are incredibly expensive and haven’t launched yet. We don’t expect either device to sell very well.

However, both tech giants are testing the waters by releasing these experimental smartphones before the market is really ready for the foldable form factor to take off. Will the inward or outward fold become the norm? How many displays does a foldable need? How many cameras should there be? These are all areas where the Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold heavily differ, and we’re excited to see how the form factor evolves over the course of 2019.
