COVID-19 cases in India increase by 38,628 in a single day, with 617 deaths

New Delhi: India recorded a single-day increase of 38,628 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of infections to 3,18,95,385, while the death toll rose to 4,27,371 with 617 new fatalities, according to the Union health ministry on Saturday. The active COVID-19 caseload in the country has decreased to 4,12,153, accounting for 1.29 percent of total infections, according to ministry data updated at 8 a.m. A decrease of 2,006 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, it said.

The ministry also stated that 17,50,081 tests were carried out on Friday, bringing the total number of COVID-19 detection tests carried out to 47,83,16,964. The daily positivity rate was calculated to be 2.21 percent. For the past 12 days, it has been less than 3%. According to the health ministry, the weekly positivity rate was 2.39 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have recovered from the disease has risen to 3,10,55,861, with a case fatality rate of 1.34 percent, according to the data.
So far, the total number of vaccine doses administered as part of the nationwide vaccination campaign has reached 50.10 crore.

The COVID-19 tally in India reached 20 lakh on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, and 50 lakh on September 16. On September 28, it surpassed 60 lakh, then 70 lakh on October 11, then 80 lakh on October 29, then 90 lakh on November 20, and finally one crore on December 19. This year, India passed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4 and 3 crore on June 23.

According to ministry data, the 617 most recent fatalities include 187 from Maharashtra and 187 from Kerala. So far, 4,27,371 deaths have been reported in the country, including 1,33,717 in Maharashtra, 36,741 in Karnataka, 34,260 in Tamil Nadu, 25,065 in Delhi, 22,771 in Uttar Pradesh, and 18,202 in Gujarat.

The health ministry emphasised that comorbidities were responsible for more than 70% of the deaths. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that the state-by-state distribution of figures is still subject to verification and reconciliation.
