Can You Eat Fruits When You Are Under The Weather? Here’s What Experts Say

The debate about whether fruits can exacerbate cough and cold has generated various opinions, leaving many people confused. While some believe that fruits, being “cold foods,” can contribute to flu and cough, others argue that fruits have no established link with seasonal illnesses. According to Ayurveda, fruits fall under the “cold food” category and may lead to flu, cough, and fever when consumed excessively. However, several studies worldwide have shown that certain fruits like bananas and pineapple contain nutrients that help prevent inflammation, dissolve mucus, and boost immunity against cough and cold. It’s essential to maintain balance and consider factors like the type of fruit, the time of day, and the quantity consumed, says consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta. While fruits like oranges, lemons, and amla, rich in vitamin C, can enhance immunity, people with chronic acidity or diabetes should be cautious about their fruit intake.

The notion of avoiding fruits at night due to a slowdown in body functions and increased susceptibility to viral infections is challenged by Ayurveda expert Dr. Ashutosh Gautam. He suggests that there is nothing unsafe about eating fruits at night, emphasizing moderation to enjoy the benefits without guilt. It’s crucial to understand individual body types, consider age, gender, and health conditions, and consult experts for dietary advice, says nutritionist Simrun Chopra. This clarification aims to help individuals make informed decisions about incorporating fruits into their diet while addressing common misconceptions.
