Parliamentary Committee Examining Bill on Women’s Marriage Age Gets Extension

The parliamentary committee tasked with examining a bill proposing to raise the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 has received another extension to present its report. The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which aims to increase the legal marriage age, is pending in the Lok Sabha and is likely to lapse with the termination of the present Lok Sabha’s tenure in June. The committee now has until May to finalize its report after this four-month extension.

The Budget session starting on January 31 marks the final session of the current Lok Sabha before the announcement of parliamentary elections. Introduced in December 2021, the bill was referred to the standing committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports under the Rajya Sabha Secretariat for detailed examination. The committee has previously received extensions, and the bill seeks to bring about parity between men and women by raising the marriage age while also aiming to override existing laws, customs, and practices related to marriage.
