Orange alert : Lower Sholayar and Parambikulam reservoirs are almost full
Ernakulam : Incessant rains leads to Parambikulam, Upper Sholayar and Lower Sholayar water reservoirs reaching their maximum storage capacity, Peringalkuthu dam and Chalakudy river are under threat of excess water flow.
It is the second alert issued in Lower Sholayar dam which is under control of the Kerala government. If the water inflow continues like this, the Sholayar dam will reach its maximum storage capacity in a few days.
People who reside on the banks of Chalakudy river have been advised to remain alert. said KSEB Sholayar section Dam Safety Assistant Engineer.
Storage capacity
The maximum capacity of the lower Sholayar dam is 2,663 feet. At present, the water level is at 2660.02 feet. A blue alert was issued when water level reached 2,658 feet. Now an orange alert has been issued.
Upper Sholayar dam’s maximum storage capacity is 3,295 feet and the water level is at 3291 feet at present. Water is taken from here to Parambikulam via canal.
The water from Upper Sholayar powerhouse is flowing to Kerala Sholayar. About 500 cusecs water is reaching Kerala Sholayar this way.
At presentThe water level in Parambikulam dam, which has a maximum storage capacity of 1,825 feet, had reached 1,821.55 feet.
After Sethupathi powerhouse in Tamil Nadu was damaged the other day, about 309 cusecs water from here was released to Peringalkuthu dam.If all these dams are opened, the water will flow into Peringalkuthu dam. In view of this, water level in Peringalkuthu was reduced to 419.90 metre.
Its maximum capacity is 424 metres. There are plans to open the sluice gates if necessary. The sluice gate was opened a week ago to reduce water level to 413.8 feet. It was closed two days back as it may affect power production.
