Alarming Rise in Hypertension Grips Kerala: Fast Food Culture and Sedentary Lifestyle Blamed

A recent health report from the Union Health Ministry has exposed the alarming prevalence of hypertension in Kerala. The report disclosed that 37% of the state’s population suffers from high blood pressure, with the highest rates recorded in the Pathanamthitta district (46.2%) and the lowest in Malappuram (26.7%). Shockingly, 90% of those with hypertension tend to overlook the condition, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness, diagnosis, and treatment.

The report underscores the necessity for regular blood pressure check-ups, healthier dietary habits, and physical activity to combat the rising wave of lifestyle-related diseases. Kerala’s shift towards a fast food culture, fueled by the popularity of Arabian dishes such as Shawarma, has significantly contributed to the deterioration of eating habits. Social media influencers and food bloggers have played a role in promoting these unhealthy food choices, leading to a surge in obesity and related health issues.

The report’s findings serve as a wake-up call for the state government to prioritize public health initiatives, promote awareness campaigns, and encourage routine medical check-ups. It is crucial for individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles, incorporating regular exercise and balanced diets, while avoiding the pitfalls of fast food addiction. Addressing these concerns promptly is essential to curb the rising tide of hypertension and other lifestyle diseases in Kerala.
