Controversial NCERT Panel Proposal Sparks Political Uproar: “India vs Bharat” Debate Grips Nation

The recent recommendation by an NCERT panel to replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in school textbooks has ignited a political firestorm, drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders across party lines. This move has been branded as a “political decision” by several leaders, prompting a fierce debate about national identity and pride.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the proposal, emphasizing that the differentiation between ‘India’ and ‘Bharat’ undermines the nation’s unity. She stressed that both terms hold significance and altering the name ‘India’ is unnecessary and divisive. Chaturvedi expressed disappointment that such a distinction was being pushed, asserting that it contradicts the spirit of India’s Constitution.

West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu condemned the move, accusing the BJP-led central government of fearing the term ‘India’. He called the decision ridiculous and warned that it sets a worrisome precedent. Basu suggested that the Centre’s discomfort with ‘India’ indicates political apprehension.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar joined the criticism, highlighting the inconsistency in official usage. He questioned the government’s motives, pointing out that institutions like the Reserve Bank of India still carry the name ‘India’. Shivakumar argued that such alterations are contrary to the nation’s history and expressed concern about the government’s stance, deeming it anti-people and anti-India.

The controversy over ‘India vs Bharat’ deepens, with political leaders and citizens engaging in passionate discussions about preserving the country’s identity and heritage amidst these proposed changes.
