Belgium extends Roberto Martinez contract till 2022 world cup

Belgian football federation has extended the contract of coach Roberto Martinez and he’ll be guiding Red Devil until 2022 FIFA World Cup finals. Apart from managing Belgium national football team, 46-year old Martinez to remain a technical director at federation for the next 2 years.

“The corona crisis has slowed things down somewhat, but the contract extension has been completed and is now official. This will allow Roberto Martinez to continue his work, lay the foundations for the future of Belgian football and train the person who will succeed him as technical director after the 2022 World Cup,” federation said in a statement as quoted by AP.

Roberto Martinez joined Belgium team as coach in 2016 replacing Marc Wilmots. Belgium was knocked out in the semi-final of 2018 world cup and he was one of the pillars to achieve the feat. Coach Martinez has said the upcoming years will be crucial for the national team as some of the top class tournaments to take place like 2022 world cup.

“The next two and a half years will be particularly intense for our national team with the Euro, the Nations League, the qualifying matches for the FIFA 2022 World Cup and this final tournament,” Coach Martinez said.

Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne are the key footballers in the Belgian team and would be key for the success at 2022 Qatar world cup. Red Devils are at the top in FIFA rankings ahead of world champions France. The team would be hot favourites at 2022 event and eventually, they’re favourites in Euro 2020 as well which is postponed to next year due to pandemic.

The Belgium federation CEO Peter Bossaert positive on Martinez contract extension and he believes that team would play better than previous years.

“With the Nations League, the European Championship and the 2022 World Cup, it will probably be the most important years in our football history. We wanted to do everything we could so that our team could start this cycle in optimal conditions. With Roberto, we keep not only a top coach, a true gentleman, but also the ideal ambassador for Belgian football,” Peter Bossaert said.

Qatar to host the 2022 world cup in the winter and Belgium would be favourites if they qualify. Just like all previous tournaments, you can play casino games at the royal casino when the world cup begins.
