Maharashtra requests Kerala for 50 specialist doctors, 100 nurses for Mumbai

The Maharashtra government has sought 50 specialist doctors and 100 nurses from Kerala as its coronavirus cases continue to increase and even private hospitals are at risk of being overrun in the state. Kerala, which recorded India’s first three coronavirus cases, has been successful in flattening the curve of new infections. The southern state has reported 847 cases, of which 521 patients were discharged after receiving treatment. Only four deaths have been recorded so far. Meanwhile, Maharashtra has over 50,000 coronavirus cases – the highest in India. Mumbai has contributed to almost 61% of Maharashtra’s cases and 60% of its fatalities.

In the wake of rising COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra has requested the Kerala government to provide 50 specialist doctors and 100 nurses on a temporary basis for the management of the viral infection. The state government has offered to give a monthly payment of Rs 80,000 to MBBS doctors and Rs 2,00,0000 to MD/MS specialists
A payment of Rs 30,000 per month will be given to trained nursing staff. The state government shall also provide accommodation, meals, medicines and PPE kits to the medical practitioners from Kerala

Mumbai: As Maharashtra faces an acute shortage of medical practitioners amid ballooning cases of COVID-19 infection, especially in Mumbai and Pune, the serving government has requested the Kerala government to send 50 specialist doctors and 100 nurses on a temporary basis at the earliest to Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra government offered to make a monthly payment of Rs 80,000 to MBBS doctors and Rs 2,00,0000 to MD/MS specialists. A payment of Rs 30,000 per month will be given to trained nursing staff which includes physicians, intensivist, etc. Moreover, the state government shall also provide accommodation, meals, medicines and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the medical practitioners.

In a letter addressed to Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja, TP Lahane, director and nodal officer (COVID-19), Maharashtra, said that in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases, the Maharashtra government has decided to set up a 600-bed facility dedicate to COVID-19 treatment at Mahalakshmi Race Course in Mumbai. The state government has taken various steps to make available the requisite manpower. However, as the cases continue to rise, more doctors and paramedical staff are required to manage COVID-19. In view of this, the state government has requested the Kerala government for assistance.

Maharashtra asks Kerala for doctors, nurses

On Sunday, with a big spike of 3,041 new COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra’s COVID-19 tally docked at 50,231.  Out of the total confirmed cases, as many as 33,988 are still active. So far, the infection has claimed 1,635 lives with 58 deaths on Sunday. However, 1,196 people were also discharged on Sunday, taking the number of cured and discharged patients to 14,600. State capital Mumbai continues to remain one of the worst-hit cities by the pandemic.
