Meta Platforms Faces Widespread Login Outage Across Major Social Media Services

Users experienced a significant disruption on Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and Messenger, due to a widespread technical issue on Tuesday. Andy Stone, Meta’s head of communications, addressed the problem on Twitter (formerly known as X), acknowledging the inconvenience caused and assuring users that the issue was swiftly resolved. Reports flooded in from users who found themselves locked out of their accounts, with feeds not refreshing on Facebook and Instagram. Notably, WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, remained unaffected during the outage. Despite concerns, a senior official from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that there was no indication of any election-related or malicious cyberactivity associated with the incident.

The timing of the outage is noteworthy, occurring just before the deadline for Big Tech companies to adhere to the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA). Meta, in its efforts to comply with the regulations, is implementing changes such as allowing users to separate their Facebook and Instagram accounts to prevent the amalgamation of personal information for targeted online ads. The connection between the outage and Meta’s preparations for DMA compliance remains unclear, raising questions about the potential impact on the company’s ongoing regulatory adjustments. This incident adds to a series of disruptions faced by Meta, with notable outages in 2021 attributed to faulty changes in routers coordinating network traffic between data centers.
