Kerala records 83 COVID-19 cases on Thursday; 62 test negative

Kerala recorded 83 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday while 62 patients recovered from the disease, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said while addressing the media after a coronavirus review meeting here.

The CM expressed condolences over the death of Kannur Iritty native PK Muhammad (70), who succumbed after battling with coronavirus. With this, the COVID-19 death toll in the state rose to 18. Muhammad, who was under treatment for cancer, had returned from Muscat via Kannur airport on May 22.

Out of the 83 COVID-19 positive cases, 25 are from Thrissur district, 13 are from Palakkad, 10 each are from Malappuram and Kasaragod, 8 are from Kollam, 7 are from Kannur, 5 are from Pathanamthitta, 2 each are from Ernakulam and Kottayam, 1 is from Kozhikode district.

27 out of the disease confirmed persons returned from abroad. Meanwhile, 37 who returned from other states (20 from Maharashtra, 7 from Delhi, 4 each from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, 1 each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh) were confirmed with the disease.

14 persons and 5 health workers contracted the disease through contact. Out of the 25 new cases in Thrissur, 4 are sanitation workers in the corporation while 4 others are loading workers at a warehouse.

Out of the 62 negative cases, 16 are from Thiruvananthapuram, 2 are from Kollam, 6 are from Ernakulam, 7 are from Thrissur, 13 are from Palakkad, 2 are from Malappuram, 3 are from Kozhikode, 8 are from Kannur and 5 are from Kasaragod.

The number of hotspots in the state has decreased to 133. 35 areas were removed from the list of hotspots while Two more areas in Palakkad – have been declared hotspots on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the CM had decided to drop his daily media briefings and appear only when there is an important announcement or development. However, he chose to address the media the very next day.
