Midday Meal Scheme: Distribution of Rice to Resume Soon, Confirms Minister

In response to the disruption in the midday meal scheme due to halted rice supply, Minister G. R. Anil has directed the immediate distribution of rice to schools. The decision follows a detailed discussion with Minister V. Sivankutty.

The supply of rice to schools was stopped by Supplyco after the education department failed to clear dues. In light of this, the ministers engaged in discussions, leading to the decision to urgently procure fourth-quarter rice from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for the midday meal scheme. Officials from the Directorate of Public Education and SUPPLYCO have been assigned responsibilities to ensure the availability of rice to schools facing shortages.

Furthermore, the meeting concluded with a decision to write to the Union Ministry of Education, seeking permission to use ‘Kerala Kuthari’ rice produced in the state for the midday meal scheme. Representatives from the Public Education, Food, and Public Distribution Department, as well as Supplyco, participated in the discussions.
