Tamil Actor Vijayakanth, DMDK Leader, Passes Away at 71

Popular Tamil actor and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakanth, known for his iconic role in ‘Captain Prabhakaran,’ passed away at the age of 71 after battling COVID-19. The actor’s transition to politics and his contributions to Tamil cinema marked his career, leaving a lasting impact on fans and followers. Vijayakanth’s journey from a celebrated actor to a prominent political figure is a notable chapter in Tamil Nadu’s socio-political landscape.

Vijayakanth, born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, gained immense popularity in the 1980s during a golden era of Tamil cinema dominated by icons like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sivaji Ganeshan. His on-screen presence in action-packed films with social messages and anti-corruption themes resonated with audiences. In 1991, his 100th film, ‘Captain Prabhakaran,’ earned him the moniker ‘Captain,’ a title that stayed with him throughout his political career.

The success of ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ marked a turning point in Vijayakanth’s cinematic journey, and his 2002 film ‘Ramana,’ directed by A R Murugadoss, further solidified his position in the industry. His versatility as an actor, even in dance sequences, surprised critics and endeared him to fans.

In 2006, Vijayakanth ventured into politics by founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), a centre-left political party. In his political debut, he created history by winning the Vridhachalam seat in the assembly elections, making him the first DMDK MLA in Tamil Nadu. At its peak, DMDK secured a significant number of seats, emerging as a notable force in the state’s politics.

However, his health had been a concern in recent times. At a function where his wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, assumed the role of DMDK’s new general secretary, his frail appearance raised concerns among supporters. Vijayakanth’s demise marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema and politics, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by his admirers and the people of Tamil Nadu.
