The History, Significance, and Theme of World Blood Donor Day 2021

Every year on June 14, the world commemorates World Blood Donor Day. The day is celebrated to raise global awareness of the importance of safe blood and blood products for transfusion. It also emphasises the critical role that unpaid blood donors play in national health systems.

History of World Blood Donor Day

The World Health Organization established World Blood Donor Day in 2004. (WHO). The date of June 14 was chosen because it was on this date in 1868 that Nobel laureate Karl Landsteiner was born. Landsteiner won the Nobel Prize for discovering the ABO blood group system.

The need for blood, according to WHO, is universal, but access to blood for all those in need is not. Blood scarcity is especially acute in developing countries. All countries require voluntary, unpaid donors who give blood on a regular basis to ensure that everyone who requires safe blood has access to it.

The theme of World Donor Day in 2021 is ‘Give blood and keep the world-beating.’ The message emphasizes the critical role blood donors play in keeping the world pulsing by saving lives and improving the health of others. This year’s campaign will place a special emphasis on the role of young people in ensuring a safe blood supply.

Italy’s National Blood Centre will host World Blood Donor Day 2021. The global event will take place on June 14, 2021, in Rome.
