Over 150 people are missing after a building in Florida collapsed, including an Indian American family.

More than 150 people are still missing in the rubble of the 12-story residential building in Florida that collapsed on June 24. An Indian-American couple and their one-year-old child are among those still missing.

Vishal Patel (42), his wife Bhavna Patel (38) and their one-year-old daughter Aishani Patel are thought to have perished in the Champion Towers South Condo collapse. Bhavna Patel is four months pregnant, according to reports.

Family members have gathered in Surfside, Florida, to submit DNA samples, according to the couple’s niece Sarina.

The family was at home when the building collapsed, she added, and she last spoke to them on June 20.

“On Father’s Day, I called to inform them that I had just booked a flight to visit them. They’d invited me to come to visit their house and meet their daughter. Because of the pandemic, I haven’t met her yet “Sarina remarked.

Sarina told CNN that the family is experiencing both disbelief and hope and that they are praying for a miracle.

Even as rigorous search-and-rescue efforts continue, five bodies have been recovered from the rubble.

Rescuers are employing a grid method to scour the debris and have deployed sonar, cameras, and K-9 resources to look for survivors, according to Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

According to media reports, the town of Surfside’s main building authority told locals that the building was in excellent condition a month after reviewing a contractor’s report from November 2018 that indicated serious structural damage.

Even if some of the damage was modest, the assessment stated that the majority of the concrete deterioration needed to be fixed as soon as possible. It also stated that structural repairs were required to maintain the building’s structural integrity.
