Kerala Building Construction Workers Welfare Board Owes Rs 469 Crore in Unsettled Pension Payments

The Kerala Building Construction Workers Welfare Board has yet to clear pension dues amounting to Rs 469 crore, with the last pension disbursement taking place in November 2022. Sources within district government offices indicate that the state board has not approved the pension funds.

As per information obtained through an RTI (Right to Information) request, a total sum of Rs 468,82,87,510 is needed to settle all outstanding pension dues. Some workers are owed approximately Rs 13,000 each. If full payment is not possible, it is suggested that at least half of the amount be sanctioned.

Up until April 2023, a total of 20,73,634 members are eligible for pension benefits. These workers contribute Rs 50 per month to the board and qualify for a pension starting at the age of 60.

The pension board attributes the distribution delay to the increase in the number of pensioners. Currently, welfare pensions are granted to 3.8 lakh members. However, the crisis is further exacerbated by the inability to raise the cess amount in line with the augmented pension funds, as stated by authorities.
