Depression and how to manage it

Most have a conception that depression is extreme. However, depression is a mood disorder that is much more than just sadness or grief. It may look very different in two different individuals and may even go unnoticed in some.

Types of depression

  • Persistent depression– Condition which last for more than 2 years. These symptoms may not be severe throughout but may fluctuate from low to high.
  • Postpartum depression– occurs in women right after childbirth and is much more severe than baby blues that go away within a week or two of delivery.
  • Psychotic depression– severe condition with hallucinations and delusions, generally of disease, poverty or being sick.
  • Bipolar disorder– not really depression but has signs similar to those of depression, alternating with signs of mania.

It is very important to seek help from friends and family so they can lend support when you need it. Depression treatment depends on the severity of the condition. It range from self-help groups to the administration of antidepressants, psychiatric treatment and lifestyle management.
