C U SOON REVIEW: A Jaw dropping thriller

From the trailer of C U Soon itself was clear that the movie belonged to the genre of screen-based films, like Searching and Unfriended, whose story unfolds almost entirely through digital screens.

Because of the restrictions imposed during the pandemic, filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan has done is use that experimental concept of technology to tell a hard-hitting socially relevant story inspired by shocking real-life incidents such as trafficking and invasion of privacy, set in two countries and told mainly through three characters who keep you glued to the screens.

Plot of the film goes through UAE-based Jimmy Kurian (Roshan Mathew) and Anumol Sebastian (Darshana Rajendran) who meet on a dating app . Jimmy proposes to Anu, that also has his mother as part of it. Their first in-person meet-up is when Jimmy brings Anu home after she says she can’t suffer physical abuse at her home anymore. Things go out of control for Jimmy when she goes missing and the police arrest him, forcing his Kochi-based cousin and cyber-security expert Kevin Thomas (Fahadh Faasil) to uncover shocking truths about Anu.

Three main actors in the movie play their parts to perfection. Darshana as the coy Anu brings in an earnestness to her role, which is heightened especially when her past is uncovered. Roshan’s character underlines the panic and tension in the film, and the actor aces those scenes. Fahadh as the strong and impatient Kevin, who is reluctant to snoop into other’s private lives, brings a sense of calm to the proceedings as the movie shifts to investigative mode in the latter portions.

Betaal Review: an intriguing horror web series

This film is a great example of making innovative content, using technology and fine storytelling, at a time when budgetary constraints and physical restrictions are forcing filmmakers to think out-of-the-box. For Mollywood’s first film that was made especially for an OTT release and experience, the film sets the bar high.
