Kerala Takes Proactive Measures to Combat Summer Heat: Thanneerpandals and Tips for Beating the Heat

As Kerala braces for scorching summer temperatures, the state introduces a refreshing initiative to combat the heat: Thanneerpandals, or water kiosks, across all localities. These kiosks, supported by local self-government and NGOs, offer clean drinking water, purified cold water, buttermilk, and ORS solutions to travelers and laborers. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has allocated Rs 25 lakh to each district from the district disaster response fund to ensure continuous availability of clean drinking water.

To further safeguard against heat-related illnesses, here are additional tips

Eat Light Meals: Opt for lighter, cooler meals such as salads, fruits like watermelon and oranges, and water-rich options like cucumber and muskmelon. Coconut water, readily available in Kerala, is excellent for replenishing lost electrolytes. Other cooling options include buttermilk, curd, lime water, barley water, and mint.

Monitor High-Risk Individuals: Keep a close watch on infants, young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Provide cooling amenities like fans or air conditioners, and ensure shaded areas for rest outdoors. Have an emergency plan in place if needed.

Rest Frequently: Take regular breaks and seek shade or cool areas if spending prolonged periods outdoors.

Recognize Symptoms: Familiarize yourself with signs of heat exhaustion (e.g., heavy sweating, weakness, nausea) and heatstroke (e.g., high body temperature, confusion). Seek immediate medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

By implementing these measures and promoting awareness, Kerala aims to ensure the well-being of its residents and visitors during the sweltering summer months.
