Mystery Surrounds CUSAT Tragedy as Principal’s Security Request Letter Goes Unsent

The tragic incident at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) during a tech fest has taken a mysterious turn as it was revealed that a letter from the principal of the School of Engineering, seeking additional security, was not handed over to the police. The letter, dated November 21, specifically requested security measures, including police presence, for the event. However, allegations suggest that the registrar failed to deliver this crucial letter to the police. CUSAT Employees Union General Secretary Anson P Anthony raised concerns about the apparent lapse, adding an element of mystery to the tragic turn of events.

In response to these claims, CUSAT Vice Chancellor P G Sankaran stated that the police had, in fact, been informed about the event, countering the allegations of a security lapse. He clarified that there was no breach of security and that six policemen were present at the venue during the event. The tragic incident, which occurred just before a music concert featuring Bollywood singer Nikhita Gandhi, claimed the lives of four individuals, including three students, and left 72 others injured. The deceased have been identified as Athul Thamby, Anne Rifta, Sara Thomas, and Alvin Joseph. The unfolding details raise questions about communication breakdowns and campus safety, prompting a deeper investigation into the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
