Priyanka and other Cong leaders detained en route to Lakhimpur Kheri

Lakhimpur Kheri: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party leaders arrived at the Lakhimpur border early Monday, but claimed they were not allowed to meet with victims of the violence that erupted during a farmers’ protest a day earlier and claimed eight lives.

Priyanka Gandhi, who is accompanied by party leader Deepender Singh Hooda and others, had to take alternate routes to reach the bordering Hargaon area in Saitapur due to heavy security on the main roads amid tensions in the violence-hit region of Lakhimpur.

We’re waiting in front of Lakhimpur Kheri. The police have prevented us from entering. We’ve come to meet the victims of the violence, Congress national secretary Dheeraj Gurjar told PTI by phone at 4.30 a.m.

Priyanka Gandhi’s convoy had previously been briefly stopped by Uttar Pradesh Police officials in Lucknow, where the Congress general secretary had arrived on Sunday night, just hours after violence was reported during an anti-farm laws protest here.

Meanwhile, mobile internet services have been suspended in parts of the violence-stricken district, where officials have also imposed restrictions under CrPC section 144, which prohibits gatherings of four or more people.

The UP police department took to Twitter early Monday to describe the incident as unfortunate, and the district administration reported eight casualties.

The ADG LO, ACS Agriculture, IG Range, and the Commissioner are on the scene, and the situation is under control. It went on to say that adequate deployment had been made to avoid any untoward incidents.
