Pathanamthitta District Experiences Landslides and Rising Water Levels After Heavy Rainfall

In the wake of heavy rainfall in Pathanamthitta district, two landslides have been reported in the hilly eastern regions. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported at this time, and the extent of the damages is yet to be assessed. These landslides occurred within forested areas.

The Maniyar and Moozhiyar dams’ gates were opened during the night of Friday in response to the continuous rain. As the rainfall subsided around midnight, the dam gates were lowered by a few inches to control the water release.

Over the past three days, the eastern hilly areas have witnessed sporadic heavy rains, leading to concerns about the rising water level in the Pampa river.

A prior warning was issued about the imminent opening of the Moozhiyar Dam’s gates. These gates were opened when the water level reached its maximum storage capacity of 196.23 meters. This action was taken as part of measures to regulate water levels in connection with the Aranmula Jalamela festival.

Due to the persistent heavy rainfall, the dam gates were opened earlier than anticipated, resulting in increased water levels in the Pampa river and its vicinity.

Multiple landslides have been reported along the road to Gavi, leading to travel disruptions and traffic congestion. Landslides have occurred near the Kaki and Anathode Dam viewpoints, as well as in the vicinity of the Pampa Dam. Consequently, travel to Gavi has been temporarily prohibited, and road repair work is set to commence on Saturday.
