‘I believed that dark skin was not pretty’ says Priyanka Chopra

Having  fair skin is considered as a plus point if you aspire to become an actor. Dark-skinned actresses are hardly given leading lady roles and skin lightening treatments have become common in Bollywood. There was a time when Priyanka Chopra used to endorse fairness creams but she stopped being a part of such campaigns after moving to Hollywood.

In a recent interview to Marie Claire, Priyanka opened up about how as a child she used to believe that dark skin was not pretty. She also spoke about how skin lightening is normalised in South Asia.

“Skin lightening was so normalized in South Asia; it’s such a large industry that everyone was doing it. In fact, doing it is still a check [mark] when you are a female actor, but it’s awful. It was awful for me, for a little girl who used to put talcum-powder cream on my face because I believed that dark skin was not pretty.”
