Puthuppally By-Election: Chandy Oommen Launches Campaign as CPM Decision Awaited

With the recent announcement of the by-election date by the Election Commission of India, Kerala’s focus now shifts to the Puthuppally constituency in Kottayam following the unfortunate passing of former CM Oommen Chandy. UDF swiftly revealed their new candidate, Chandy Oommen, a mere three hours after the EC’s declaration. The election is slated for September 5th, leaving all contenders with limited campaign time. Vote counting is set for September 8, with the code of conduct already in effect in Kottayam district.

In response to UDF’s swift nomination, CPM faces the task of promptly deciding their Puthuppally candidate, considering UDF’s unprecedented efficiency. The CPM state committee is expected to convene shortly, with sources suggesting a decision by this Friday. BJP’s state executive and core committee meetings in Thrissur on Saturday will determine their candidate, with both parties reportedly considering young local leaders.

UDF’s selection of Chandy Oommen for Puthuppally was announced by KPCC president K Sudhakaran in Delhi. Sudhakaran expressed that this by-election will reflect public sentiment against the government. Chandy Oommen is set to commence his campaign on Wednesday. He responded humbly, acknowledging the significant responsibility bestowed upon him by the party and expressing his commitment to support the less fortunate.

Opposition leader VD Satheesan confirmed the unanimous decision on Chandy Oommen’s candidacy, revealing that discussions with AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, A K Antony, and Ramesh Chennithala were held prior to the announcement. UDF convener M.M. Hassan, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, and P.C. Vishnunath MLA participated in the decision-making process, ensuring Oommen Chandy’s family was informed beforehand.
