Joji Movie Review: Fahadh Faasil’s Macbeth adaptation is atypical

Power and  greed corrupts. This is what Shakespeare’s Macbeth has taught us.  Dileesh Pothan’s Joji is an adaptation of Macbeth. Who better than Fahadh Faasil to show greed in his eyes?

Joji starts with Kuttappan PK Panachel (played by PN Sunny), who is physically active and a go-getter wealthy patriarch who manages house expenses and his properties on his own and doesn’t trust his three sons . . His eldest son Jomon (Baburaj) is an impulsive person who is alcoholic after his divorce. He lives with his son Popy (Alister Alex). Second son Jaison (Joji Mundakayam) is the softer one and his third one , Joji (Fahadh Faasil).

According to Kuttapan Joji is good for nothing. The family politics, Joji’s relationship with sister in law Bincy and his ways to gain power are what makes the film intriguing.

During many instances, it is almost like there’s nothing happening on screen. Three sons are equally greedy and want to take their father’s place. Even when Kuttapan is recovering, they always longs for his death.

Shyju Khalid’s cinematography and Justin Varghese’s BGM are important assets for Joji.  Joji is a subtle family drama that talks about amorality and how greed corrupts a man. With a slow-paced screenplay and excellent performances, Joji is a winner.
