“Rising Train Accidents: Palakkad Division Witnesses Surge in Passengers Falling Off Moving Trains

The Palakkad railway division has witnessed a concerning surge in the number of fatalities resulting from passengers falling off moving trains. In 2023 alone, 40 individuals lost their lives in such accidents, with a majority of incidents occurring when passengers were either sitting on the train’s doorstep or standing near the doors. This trend is particularly prevalent on the Kanjikode-Coimbatore railway line, known for its curved tracks, increasing the risk of passengers falling off the train. Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials stress the importance of passenger awareness and caution, especially when the train is in motion, to prevent such tragic incidents. Officials note that distractions, such as engrossment in phones and the use of headsets, contribute to passengers not being fully aware of their surroundings, heightening the risk of accidents.

The latest incidents underline the need for increased safety measures, passenger education, and enhanced monitoring to reduce accidents and ensure the well-being of railway passengers. Authorities could consider awareness campaigns, clear signage, and stricter enforcement of safety regulations to address this growing issue. Additionally, passengers are urged to exercise caution, refrain from sitting on the train’s doorstep or standing near doors, and remain vigilant during their journey to mitigate the risk of accidents and fatalities.
