Eid ul-Fitr; All you need to know about this festival

This year, Ramadan in India began on April 14.  Eid ul-Fitr date is determined based on the crescent moon sighting. So, there is no fixed date . This year, Eid celebrations are likely to begin on  May 12 .

Eid ul-Fitr is also known as the ‘Feast of breaking fast’. Marks the first day of the tenth Islamic month Shawwal.

Muslims thank Allah for the holy Quran, which was given to Prophet Muhammed on Laylat al-Qadr, one of the odd-numbered nights during the last ten days of the month . It also  mark the completion of a month-long fast from sunrise to sunset. For the unversed, fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, The festival symbolises symbolizes patience, devotion, endurance and piety.

During this day muslims offer their prayers to Allah listen to the Khutba  and give Zakat-ul-Fitr to the needy. Apart from these rituals, Muslims wear new clothes, enjoy a feast and cherish family get-togethers.
