Devotees Gather for Sacred ‘Attukal Pongala’ in Ananthapuri Amid Festive Spirit

Several lakhs of women have gathered in Ananthapuri for the sacred ‘Attukal Pongala,’ eagerly awaiting the auspicious moment at 10:30 am today. The city is transformed into a massive yaga venue as fire is transferred from the ‘pandara’ hearth to the hearths prepared by women. Popular dishes like Vellapongal, Kadumpayasam, Therali, and Mandaputtu are prepared by devotees. Local residents and voluntary organizations are actively providing water and food to the devotees, with authorities from the police, fire force, health department, and municipal corporation ensuring a smooth and auspicious event.

The devotees, having cleansed their body and mind through fasting, include participants from various states and even foreign countries. The rituals involve lighting a lamp from the sanctum sanctorum, transferring it to various hearths, and culminating in the ‘ucha puja’ at 2:30 pm. The festive atmosphere includes an air force helicopter showering flowers during the ceremony. Evening events include the Kuthiyottam ceremony at 7:30 pm and a grand procession of the goddess to Manacaud Shastha Temple at 11 pm, featuring a famous tusker and accompanied by armed police and musical ensembles.
