Cyclone Tauktae heads towards Gujarat, likely to intensify into ‘very severe’ storm on May 17

The rapidly intensifying system shall cause extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204 mm) over Lakshadweep, Kerala, ghats of Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, while Goa and South Konkan regions will receive moderate intensity rain, particularly up to May 17, the IMD has stated

Earlier on Friday, the ministry of earth science had stated that the deep depression over Lakshadweep will intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours.

“The deep depression over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast and the east-central Arabian sea moved north-north-eastwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centres at 1730 hours IST on 14 May over Lakshadweep area near latitude 11.6°N and longitude 72.6°E, about 55 km north-northwest of Amini Divi, 290 km west-southwest of Kannur (Kerala), 1060 km south-southeast of Veraval (Gujarat),” the ministry said in a tweet.

The cyclonic storm is very likely to intensify further during the subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and reach near Gujarat coast by the morning of 18 May

Heavy rain warning for West Coast

A warning with respect to high winds and heavy rainfall has been issued for the West Coast and adjoining interior peninsular India.

 

Lakshadweep Islands: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls (>20 cm) at isolated places very likely today and tomorrow ( Friday and Saturday); heavy to very heavy falls at a few places on Saturday; and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on Sunday.

 

Kerala: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places very tomorrow. heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls (> 20 cm) at isolated places on Friday and Saturday; and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on Sunday and Monday.

 

Tamil Nadu (Ghat districts): Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places very likely tomorrow; heavy to very heavy falls with extremely heavy falls at isolated places on Saturday; and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on Sunday.

 

Karnataka (Coastal & adjoining Ghat districts): Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places very likely on friday; heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on Saturday; heavy to very heavy falls at a few paces with extremely heavy falls at isolated places on Saturday; heavy to very heavy fall at a few places on Sunday; and heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places on Monday.

 

South Konkan and Goa: Light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places very likely on Saturday and heavy to very heavy falls at a few paces on Sunday and Monday.
