Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail Project: A Step Closer to Reality

The dream of a metro rail system in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, is edging closer to reality, mirroring the success of the Kochi metro. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has taken a significant step forward by entrusting the responsibility of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Under KMRL’s management, the Thiruvananthapuram metro rail project, which has been a topic of discussion for over a decade, is making substantial progress. The eagerly awaited DPR is set to be submitted to the government by KMRL in January. Construction activities will commence once both the state and central authorities approve the DPR.

The groundwork for this momentous development was laid when KMRL presented Thiruvananthapuram’s comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) in July. While the CMP did not specify the type of metro system to be implemented, an alternate transport analysis study led to the conclusion that a medium metro, akin to the successful Kochi model, would be the ideal solution for the capital city. The final CMP report will accompany the DPR when it is submitted to the government.

The inception of the Thiruvananthapuram metro rail project dates back to 2012, and in 2014, the initial project outline was proposed by DMRC. The envisioned first phase would stretch from Pallipuram to Kaimanam, followed by the second phase from Kaimanam to Neyyattinkara, with an estimated cost of Rs 4219 crore. Later, the project management was transferred to KMRL, paving the way for this significant leap toward a modern, efficient metro rail system in Thiruvananthapuram.
