Kerala CM Advocates Mental Health as a Fundamental Right on World Mental Health Day

On World Mental Health Day (October 10), Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the significance of ensuring the mental well-being of individuals regardless of their socio-cultural background. He asserted that mental health should be regarded as a fundamental right for all citizens.

In a statement shared on his social media, the Chief Minister highlighted the challenges posed by the competitive and exploitative nature of capitalism, underlining the necessity for societal efforts toward a better world to attain tranquility.

This year’s World Mental Health Day theme, ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right’, emphasizes the importance of mental health in the broader context of human rights. Historically, human rights discussions have focused on essential needs like food, shelter, and healthcare. However, mental health is recognized as a vital aspect contributing to overall quality of life, as acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO).
