Tragic Stampede at CUSAT Tech Fest Leaves Four Dead and Dozens Injured

In a tragic incident during a Tech Fest at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), four individuals lost their lives, and at least 60 students sustained injuries in a stampede. The incident occurred during a music concert featuring Nikhita Gandhi at the open-air auditorium. The stampede reportedly ensued when students rushed inside the auditorium due to a sudden downpour. The injured were promptly transported to Medical College in Kalamassery and private hospitals, with two students in critical condition. The campus was hosting the annual Tech Fest named ‘Dhishna,’ attracting students from various colleges.

As part of the Tech Fest, a musical program was organized at the open-air auditorium. Unfortunately, the sudden rain led to a surge of students seeking shelter, resulting in chaos. Dr. PK Baby, Director of CUSAT Student Welfare, explained that the steps of the auditorium created problems as more people arrived, causing those on top of the stairs to fall on those below. The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. P. G. Sankaran, acknowledged the critical condition of two students and highlighted the challenges posed by the large crowd.

Health Minister Veena George reported that around 18 people were admitted to a private hospital, with one student in critical condition. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan convened an emergency meeting, expressing condolences for the students’ tragic deaths. Vijayan announced the cancellation of all cultural and art events planned for the ongoing Nava Kerala Sadas program. Ministers P Rajeev and R Bindhu were deputed to coordinate measures at the CUSAT campus, ensuring treatment for all injured individuals.
