Indian Government Introduces Bills to Replace British-Era Laws with New Criminal Legislation

The Indian government is poised to overhaul the existing criminal legislations in the nation. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, presented three bills in the Lok Sabha on Friday, aiming to replace the antiquated British-era laws: the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC), and Indian Evidence Act (IEA).

Shah disclosed that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 will be referred to a parliamentary committee for thorough examination. He emphasized that the modifications in the criminal laws are intended to enhance justice.

“From the year 1860 up to 2023, the criminal justice system in the country operated under laws crafted by the British. The laws slated for replacement… were primarily designed to safeguard and reinforce the British administration; the objective was punishment rather than ensuring justice. The new trio of laws will replace them, embodying the essence of safeguarding the rights of Indian citizens,” Shah explained.
