Environmentalist Sundarlal Bahuguna dies of Covid at AIIMS

New Delhi: Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna, who was best known as the leader of the Chipko Movement, died due to Covid-19 Friday. 

“Chipko movement leader Sundarlal Bahuguna died of COVID-19 at AIIMS, Rishikesh today,” the AIIMS Rishikesh informed.

The 94-year-old was admitted to the hospital after his oxygen levels started fluctuating on May 8, according to a report by ANI.He was also a Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awardee. The environmentalist will be cremated at the Ganges in Rishikesh.

He was one of the first environmental activists in India to be awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2009.

The organization and the people have taken up agitations across the country against a number of environmental issues such as deforestation, large dams and mining.
