New IT Act; All Big Firms sent details; Except Twitter

New Delhi: Social media organizations other than Twitter provided the necessary information under the country’s new IT law. The national media quoted government sources as saying that Facebook, Google, Linked In, WhatsApp, Koo, ShareChat, Telegram etc shared information.

The companies have passed on the information including the names of the Chief Complaints Officer, Nodal Contact Person and Complaint Officer. Officials clarified that Twitter still does not comply with the rules and the company has not sent the information of the Chief Complaints Officer to the IT Ministry.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT on Wednesday enacted new laws that mandate the appointment of a complaints officer in India by social media platforms, setting up a grievance redressal system and removing content within 36 hours of the legal order. It has also been suggested that officials and employees should be Indian citizens.

Twitter, a microblogging website owned by Jack Darcy, is in controversy in India not only over new IT laws but also content control. Earlier in the day, the central government had informed Twitter of its strict stand to follow the laws of the country instead of proposing conditions to the world’s largest democracy.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, has filed a lawsuit against the central government, arguing that the new rules are unconstitutional and against users’ privacy.
