Stefanos Tsitsipas defeats Alexander Zverev in a five-setter to reach his first grand slam final in 2021.

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 to reach his first grand slam final at the French Open.

The first men’s semifinal on Court Philippe Chatrier went the distance between fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and sixth seed Alexander Zverev. Tsitsipas made history by becoming the first Greek tennis player to reach a grand slam final.

Tsitsipas dominated the first two sets with superb defending and stinging counterattacks.

Zverev’s serve improved as the match progressed, but he struggled to return and was kept well behind the baseline in rallies as Tsitsipas moved him around the court and found angles.

Tsitsipas’ level dropped slightly at the start of the third set, and Zverev capitalized on his errors to rally. Tsitsipas then began the fourth set with a double fault and immediately dropped his serve.

On the other hand, the sixth-seeded German regrouped and added more power to his shots with early breaks in the third and fourth sets, tying the match at two sets apiece.

Tsitsipas made his first Grand Slam final appearance. It was his third major semifinal appearance in a row and fourth overall.

Zverev has only appeared in one major final, the US Open last year.
