Bangladeshi businessman faces arrest after actress Pori Moni accuses him of rape and attempted murder.

Dhaka: A Bangladeshi businessman was arrested on Monday after a police complaint was filed against him by prominent film actress Shamsunnahar Smriti, alleging that he attempted to rape and murder her at a club here.

Pori Moni, a 28-year-old actress, had earlier asked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for justice in a Facebook post and held a press conference on Sunday night, accusing businessman Nasir U Mahmood, a real estate developer and the entertainment and cultural affairs secretary of Dhaka Boat Club, of assaulting her.

She filed a police complaint against the businessman, the main accused, and four others on Monday, alleging that Nasir assaulted her four days ago at a club in Dhaka’s Uttara.

Police raided the businessman’s home after receiving the complaint and arrested him along with four others. According to The Daily Star newspaper, two of the arrestees are FIR named accused in the case filed by the actress, while three others are their associates.

According to Harun or Rashid, joint commissioner (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch, a case under the Narcotics Control Act will be filed against the five, as drugs and alcohol were discovered during the raid.

The accused, according to Harun, used to hold parties at various clubs, often exploiting young women.
