Kerala Government Grants Onam Allowance for MGNREGS and Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme Workers

The Kerala government has revealed its plans to grant an Onam festival allowance to workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and the Ayyankali Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme. This allowance will be given to those individuals who have completed a minimum of 100 days of work. Kerala’s Finance Minister, K N Balagopal, shared that each worker fulfilling this criterion will receive a festival allowance of Rs 1,000 on the occasion of Onam.

To facilitate this initiative, the Finance Department has allocated Rs 46 crore. Balagopal further noted that approximately 460,000 individuals will be eligible for this allowance. The Ayyankali Urban Employment Guarantee Scheme, introduced by the state government, aims to establish a robust, rights-centered social safety net for urban residents in Kerala.

In a separate announcement earlier in the week, the Kerala government had disclosed a bonus of Rs 4,000 for employees in the state sector, aligning with the festive period of Onam. Additionally, the LDF administration had declared a special festival allowance of Rs 2,750 for government employees who are not entitled to receive the bonus.
