Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coca-Cola snub: Fevicol’s quirky advertisement wins over netizens

The Euro Cup remains Europe’s most important football event, but this year, Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and soft drink company Coca-Cola are making more headlines than the matches. During a press conference ahead of Portugal’s match against Hungary, the star player set aside two bottles of Coca-Cola in favor of water. His action resulted in billions of dollars in losses for the company. Taking advantage of the opportunity, the adhesive brand Fevicol won the internet with its amusing advertisement.

Fevicol, which has carved a niche for itself in terms of interesting advertisements, shared a post asking people to use the adhesive to keep the bottles in place, and it quickly went viral. Two Fevicol bottles can be seen in the image, where Coca-Cola bottles were placed before Cristiano Ronaldo, with a backdrop similar to the Euro Cup press conference. “Na bottle hategi, na valuation ghategi,” the tagline says. “Haye ni mera Coka Coka Coka Coka ”

This isn’t the first time Fevicol has seized an opportunity to turn social movements into advertising opportunities. They had also given a quirky twist to ‘Megxit.’ On its online platforms, the brand had launched a witty social media campaign mocking #Megxit. “Dear Royal Family, Kohinoor nahi, Fevicol le jaana chahiye tha,” read the text around the Royal Crown.

Meanwhile, Coca-stock Cola’s plummeted, leaving the company with billions of dollars in losses. “Coca-Cola shares fell from 56.10 to 55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, reducing the company’s value from $242 billion to $238 billion,” according to a Marca report. Within a half-hour, the value plummeted.

Ronaldo has been outspoken in his support for a healthy diet, and he is known to chastise his son when he is caught eating junk food. “Every now and then, my son drinks Coca-Cola or Fanta and eats crisps, and he knows I don’t like that,” Ronaldo has previously stated.

A day after causing havoc on the stock market, Ronaldo scored twice to lead his Iberian nation to a 3-0 victory over Hungary. He also added to his legend by becoming the European Championship’s all-time leading scorer with 11 goals.
