Mohanan Nair, also known as Mohanan Vaidyar, a self-described naturopath in Kerala, died on Saturday after collapsing at a relative’s home in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 65 years old at the time. According to the staff at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, where his body was shifted, a post mortem would reveal the cause of death. According to Mathrubhumi, Mohanan Vaidyar’s relatives told the police that he has been sick with a fever and breathing problems since Saturday morning.

Last year, Mohanan Vaidyar, who was frequently involved in debates over the treatment of viral diseases, was arrested after claiming to be able to cure COVID-19. He was also arrested in October 2019 for allegedly misdiagnosing a minor patient’s skin disease and providing incorrect treatment. Since the outbreak of the Nipah virus in 2018, he has maintained that there is no such thing as the Nipah virus. He claimed at the time that he ate fruits eaten by bats, which were thought to be Nipah carriers, to prove that the virus did not exist.

Mohanan Vaidyar, a native of Kottarakkara, had been living in Cherthala, Alappuzha district, for many years. He operated a treatment centre in Alappuzha’s Krishnapuram Grama Panchayat, which was shut down by panchayat officials in 2019 following an investigation into his practise, which did not employ trained doctors. Vaidyar had also run an Ayurveda clinic in Thrissur’s Pattikad.
