Petrol has surpassed the Rs 100 mark in parts of Kerala, and fuel prices have risen 55 times in the last six months.

Thiruvananthapuram: The price of petrol has surpassed Rs 100 per litre in several parts of Kerala.

This year, the price of gasoline and diesel has been raised 55 times in six months. However, the prices were only reduced four times. Prices had not been raised in over two months, when the Assembly elections were held in five states.

On Thursday, the highest petrol price in the state was recorded in Poopara, Idukki district, at Rs 100.09 per litre. The cost is Rs 100.04 at Rajakumari in Idukki and Rs 100 at Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram, and Rs 100 at Anapara in Idukki. The cost of diesel in Poopara is Rs 94.80.

The base price is Rs 44.39 when the consumer pays Rs 100 at the petrol pump. The remaining Rs 55.61 is made up of central and state taxes and cess.

The tax levied by the Centre has increased by 300 per cent in the last six years. The excise duty, which was Rs 9.48 in 2014, has now increased to Rs 32.90. The diesel tax has risen from Rs 3.56 to Rs 31.50.

Dissecting Rs 100

To purchase crude oil, you will need Rs 33.29.

India purchases the crude oil required for one litre of gasoline from various countries at an average cost of Rs 33.29 per litre.

Rs 7.46 for refinement

One litre of crude oil costs Rs 7.46 to refine into fuel.

Rs 3.64 for commission and freight

Petrol dealers pay a commission of Rs 3.45. The freight fee is 19 paise per litre.

Rs 1.40 excise duty

The Centre levies an excise duty of Rs 1.40 per litre. 40% of the excise duty must be shared with the states. As a result, the Centre does not significantly raise the excise duty.

Rs 11 as a special duty

The Centre always raises this special additional excise duty instead of the excise duty. The states do not receive a share of this sum. It only goes to the Center.

Rs. 20.50 as a cess

The Centre imposes two kinds of cess. Rs 18 for road and infrastructure cess Rs 2.50 agriculture and infrastructure development cess

Rs 22.71 in state tax

The state levies a sales tax of Rs 21.49. There is an additional sales tax of Rs 1 and a 22 paisa cess.

(The states receive 56 paise from the central excise duty.)

Rs 55.61 in taxes and cess
