On Monday (June 28), Twitter removed the contentious map that depicted Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as separate countries. On late Monday night (June 28), the global map that had previously appeared under the ‘Career’ section of the Twitter website under the header ‘Tweep Life’ was completely removed from the webpage. The obvious distortion has sparked outrage among netizens, who are calling for strict action against the microblogging platform.
The uproar comes amid a squabble between the Indian government and Twitter over new IT regulations. Following public scrutiny of the distorted map, which elicited harsh condemnation from netizens, calls for strict action against the microblogging platform were made. This is not the first time Twitter has erroneously depicted India’s map. Previously, it depicted Leh as part of China.
The US digital behemoth has been at odds with the Indian government over new social media regulations. Despite repeated reminders, the government has confronted Twitter for deliberate defiance and failure to comply with the country’s new IT rules.
