The CBI launches an investigation into the ISRO spy case and talks with Nambi Narayanan in Kerala.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an investigation into the espionage case involving the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in which certain police officers are accused of framing former scientist Nambi Narayanan. As part of the probe, a team of officers from New Delhi visited Nambi Narayanan at his home in Thiruvananthapuram on June 30, Wednesday, and took his testimony. Former Kerala police officials, including former Director General of Police (DGP) Siby Mathews, were named in a First Information Report filed by the CBI in May.The FIR was filed after it was discovered that Nambi Narayanan had been falsely accused in the infamous ISRO spy case from 1994.

In April of this year, the Supreme Court ordered the CBI to look into the allegations that Nambi Narayanan was unfairly implicated in the case. The Supreme Court’s decision was based on the conclusions of a three-person committee led by retired Supreme Court Justice DK Jain. The Special Investigation Team that investigated the case was led by Siby Mathews, with KK Joshua, S Vijayan, and Thampi S Durgadutt as members. Meanwhile, Siby Mathews was granted anticipatory bail in the case.

In the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Thiruvananthapuram, the CBI filed a classified FIR. According to The Hindu, the former police officials were accused of “wrongful arrest,” “custodial abuse,” and “unjustified implication” of Nambi Narayanan and others in the FIR. Apart from Kerala police officers, the FIR also names RB Sreekumar, the former Deputy Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

According to a report from the special branch, Nambi Narayanan was working at ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) when the complaint was filed at a police station in Thiruvananthapuram in November 1994. Despite the fact that the CBI ultimately dismissed the case as unfounded, Nambi Narayanan went to the Supreme Court to seek punishment against the police officers.
