Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has demanded a ‘Bharat Ratna’ for healthcare professionals who fought COVID-19.

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has demanded the Bharat Ratna for doctors and healthcare workers who were on the frontlines of the fight against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic. He stated that this would be a fitting tribute to the doctors who died.

“This year, the “Indian doctor” should be awarded the Bharat Ratna. And by “Indian Doctor,” I refer to all doctors, nurses, and paramedics. This will be a fitting memorial to the martyred doctors. And an honour for those who serve without regard for their own life or family. This will make the entire country happy “Arvind Kejriwal said in a Hindi-language tweet on Sunday.

This statement from the Delhi CM comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised doctors’ contributions to saving lives from coronavirus in his address to the Indian Medical Association on National Doctors’ Day.

India has saved the lives of lakhs of people and outperformed more developed and prosperous countries in terms of Covid-19 infection and mortality per lakh population, according to the Prime Minister, who also credited doctors, healthcare workers, and frontline workers.

Noting that coronavirus is new and mutating, the Prime Minister stated that India’s doctors are fighting the virus’s challenges with their knowledge and experience.

These frontline warriors also shared their experiences during the second wave on National Doctors Day, with many saying they couldn’t see their family members for days.

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indian Medical Association reported on June 30 that 798 doctors died during the second wave of Covid-19 across the country, with Delhi losing the most at 128 doctors, followed by Bihar at 115.
