New Delhi: Maharashtra and Kerala accounted for more than half of the COVID-19 cases reported in India last week, according to the Centre, which also highlighted that the pandemic is far from ended and that complacency is not an option.

“The country is still grappling with the second wave,” a senior official remarked at a press conference, “and we need to reflect on whether we can afford to believe that COVID-19 is finished.”

The government has stated that images from tourist attractions and the way individuals mix without following Covid procedures are “a severe source of concern,” and that such behaviour will enhance the danger of viral propagation.

Lav Agarwal, the health ministry’s joint secretary, cited recent increases in instances in some nations, notably Russia and the United Kingdom, to warn people not to relax their guard.

He advocated for stringent adherence to COVID-19 protocols, such as mask wear and physical separation.

More than half of the COVID-19 cases recorded in India last week came from two states, Maharashtra (21%), and Kerala (32%), he said, emphasising the importance of adhering to containment measures.

According to the official, 80 percent of new Covid cases in India are reported from 90 districts across 15 states and union territories, indicating that these areas require special attention.

In the week ending July 8, 66 districts in 17 states and UTs reported a COVID-19 positive rate of more than 10%, according to him.

No cases of the Lambda version of COVID-19 have been documented in India, according to the authorities.

According to data released on Friday by the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 43,393 new coronavirus infections, bringing the overall number of cases to 3,07,52,950, while active cases have decreased to 4,58,727.

With 911 more deaths, the death toll has risen to 4,05,939 people.
