Tokyo Olympics: The Delhi government announces a Rs 3 crore prize fund for gold medal winners from the city.

As four Delhi athletes have been picked to compete in the Tokyo Olympics, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had a meeting with Delhi Sports University Vice-Chancellor Karnam Malleshwari to explore ways to strengthen the level of support for these athletes.

The importance of boosting enthusiasm and providing multidimensional support to Delhi athletes competing in the coveted Tokyo Olympics 2020, as well as the role of the Delhi Sports University in developing the next generation of athletes who will represent India in future Olympic games, was emphasized.

On the eve of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Delhi Government has also offered cash rewards totaling Rs. 3 crores for every Delhi athlete who win a gold medal in Tokyo.

Those who win a silver medal at the Olympics would receive Rs. 2 crores, while those who win a bronze medal will receive Rs. 1 crore.

All coaches of the aforementioned athletes who won medals will also receive Rs. 10 lakhs. Deepak Kumar, Manika Batra, Amoj Jacob, and Sarthak Bhambri are among the Delhi athletes.

Manika Batra, a Khel Ratna Awardee, will compete in Table Tennis, while Deepak Kumar will compete in 10m Air Rifle Shooting.

Amoj Jacob will compete in the 4x400m relay, and Delhi’s Sarthak Bhambri will also compete in the 4x400m relay.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia stated, “Preparations are in full swing for Delhi to produce future Olympians, and we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our efforts to construct a world-class Sports University.” The Delhi Sports University will seek to develop athletes who will compete for medals for the country at the Olympic Games.

“Sporting events will be organised to promote Delhi as a major sports hub. In order to promote sports in this direction, the university will organize sports events all over Delhi through community sports so that an active environment is created for sports in Delhi as well as in the whole country and we can host the 2048 Olympic Games,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Sports University Karnam Malleshwari said, “Delhi Sports University congratulates each and every athlete participating in the Tokyo Olympics.

“With the preparation to build Delhi Sports University, I promise each and every student in the nation who has dreams of becoming a strong sportsperson that Delhi Sports University will provide world-class facilities and sports equipment to build athletic acumen,” he added.

Delhi Sports University is also establishing Delhi Sports School. Admissions to Delhi Sports School will begin in the next semester.

Sports will be assigned to pupils based on their abilities and interests, and they will receive the greatest training in their sport.
