A high-speed solar storm is on its way to Earth, potentially disrupting cellphone and GPS signals.

New Delhi: A powerful solar storm is approaching the Earth at 1.6 million kilometres per hour and will strike the planet on Sunday or Monday. According to Spaceweather.com, the storm originated in the Sun’s atmosphere. This would have a major impact on the region of space dominated by the Earth’s magnetic field.

“THE SOLAR WIND IS ON THE WAY: A high-speed stream of solar wind is expected to strike Earth’s magnetic field later today. Wind speeds of up to 500 km/s could be expected to flow from an equatorial hole in the sun’s atmosphere. Full-fledged geomagnetic storms are unlikely, but minor geomagnetic disturbances could cause high-latitude auroras,” according to a blog post on their website. People living at the North or South Poles will be treated to a spectacular display of celestial lighting as a result of the solar storm.

According to Spaceweather.com, the Earth’s outer atmosphere could be heated as a result of solar storms, which could have a direct impact on satellites. This could interfere with GPS navigation, mobile phone signals, and satellite television. Power lines can carry a lot of current, which can blow up transformers. According to NASA, the speed of the solar storm could exceed the expected 1.6 million kilometres per hour.
